Overview

Many of the decisions that most affect people’s careers and livelihoods are made not by courts but by government agencies — civil service commissions, licensing boards, and other state and local administrative bodies. These proceedings follow their own procedures, evidentiary rules, and deadlines, and an unfavorable agency decision can often be challenged only through a timely petition for writ of mandate in the Superior Court. Mr. Math has represented individuals in administrative proceedings and the judicial review that follows them for over five decades, bringing deep experience in both the agency process and the courts that oversee it.

Notable Matter

In Hample v. Civil Service Commission of Santa Barbara County (Cal. Ct. App. 2022), a seventeen-year public employee was terminated and lost his case before the county Civil Service Commission. After our firm became involved, we filed a Petition for a Writ of Mandate, and the Superior Court reversed the Commission and entered judgment in Mr. Hample’s favor. Following two appeals and further negotiation, we achieved a substantial settlement including back pay, attorney’s fees, and full restoration of the client’s pension.
